The godfather of champeta, maestro Abelardo Carbono—an outstanding guitarist and singer from Colombia who passed away in 2021.

His compositions continue to have a major impact and are played by the greatest diggers and DJs around the globe. It’s no wonder that labels like Palenque Records, Discos Machuca, Vampisoul, Soundway, and Analog Africa have compiled his brilliant music over the last 30 years. Together with Quantic, this song was recorded in Cali at Quantic’s Studio Sonido del Valle to bring you that special vintage sound, reminiscent of the African productions of pioneers like Étoile de Dakar, Orchestra Baobab, and Moussa Doumbia. For Quantic it was like a dream come true because Abelardo Carbono was one of his favorite musician from Latin America !

This collaboration is a remarkable musical meeting between Abelardo Carbono, the father of Afro-Caribbean psychedelia, and the one and only Will Holland (Quantic). They recorded several tracks together, including the Afrobeat-inspired « La Piña Madura », released in 2019 by Palenque Records. There Is an upcoming remix by Voilaaa of that track that will press on Vinyle.

This is a brand-new radio edit by Lucas Silva, head of Palenque Records, from the upcoming Abelardo Carbono EP —coming soon. The label is based in Colombia, Bogota and has already released more than hundreds of productions and strong project from Africa & South America.

Abelardo was deeply influenced by African and Afrobeat music, blending it with the psychedelic yet groovy sounds of the Caribbean. He remains one of the best-kept secrets of Colombian music. A native of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, Abelardo Carbono achieved legendary status among his country’s musical icons by fusing homegrown cumbia with the chiming guitars of West African soukous, a style enormously popular with local tropical sound systems. He drenched it all in his off-kilter, surreal, and slightly psychedelic sensibility.
